The DEF tank isn’t just a tank. It carries the heater that keeps DEF liquid below 12°F, the level sender and, on newer trucks, the quality sensor — and any of them failing throws a derate just as fast as a bad pump. Heater failures show up the first cold week of the year; level and quality sensors fail from contamination and crystallized DEF. Dealers sell the assembly for a price that reflects three sensors and a heater.
We supply used OEM DEF tank assemblies from running donor trucks with the heater and sensors, checked where possible and covered by our warranty.
Signs your def tank has failed
- DEF heater codes (P20B9, P20BA and similar) in cold weather, with a derate
- DEF level reads empty, or stays full after filling
- Reductant quality codes with fresh, clean DEF
- Crystallized DEF around the tank cap, fittings or the bottom of the tank
- Leaks at the tank, sending unit or pickup
- Derate that appears only in freezing temperatures
Before you order
- Send your VIN — tank capacity, sensor package and mounting vary by chassis, wheelbase and year.
- Clean and flush DEF lines and the pump filter when the tank is replaced; crystals in the lines re-contaminate the new tank.
- Check the heater relay/fuse and connector before condemning the tank heater.
- Fill only with fresh ISO 22241 DEF from a sealed container after installation.

Why does my truck only derate in winter?
The tank heater has failed. DEF freezes around 12°F; when the heater can’t thaw it the system derates until it can dose. A working tank heater ends the winter derates.
