Slow crank on a cold morning, a click with fully charged batteries, a starter that grinds or stays engaged — a diesel truck’s starter takes a beating and it fails when it’s coldest and the truck is most needed. New OEM gear-reduction starters for the 4HK1, Power Stroke, Duramax and Cummins cost real money; cheap replacements don’t survive the compression.
We supply used OEM starters from running donor trucks, bench-tested for current draw and solenoid engagement, and covered by our warranty. A refundable core charge may apply.
Signs your starter has failed
- Click but no crank with good batteries and clean cables
- Slow crank that gets worse warm (worn brushes and bushings)
- Grinding or a whir without engaging (drive/bendix)
- Starter stays engaged after the engine fires
- Intermittent no-crank that a tap on the starter cures
- Smoke or a burnt smell from the starter after a long crank
Before you order
- Send your VIN and engine — gear-reduction starters differ by engine, flywheel tooth count and 12 V/24 V setup on some chassis.
- Load-test batteries and check the cable ends, ground strap and starter relay before condemning the starter.
- Inspect the flywheel/flexplate ring gear through the starter hole for damaged teeth.
- Torque the mounting bolts and battery cable to spec; a loose starter feed melts terminals.
