Blue smoke, a whistle that turned into a whine, P0299 underboost, or oil in the intercooler — a turbo failure takes a diesel from working truck to boat anchor fast, and a new OEM turbo for a 4HK1, 6.7L Power Stroke, 6.6L Duramax, 6.7L Cummins or Fuso 4P10 is one of the most expensive bolt-on parts on the engine. Variable-geometry turbos add an actuator that fails on its own.
We supply used OEM turbochargers from running donor engines, checked for shaft play, oil seals and VGT actuator movement, and covered by our warranty. A refundable core charge may apply and is stated on your quote.
Signs your turbocharger has failed
- Loss of power with P0299 (underboost) or P0234 (overboost)
- Blue or gray smoke; oil in the intercooler pipes
- Whine, siren or grinding from the turbo that rises with RPM
- VGT actuator codes, or a sticking vane mechanism (sluggish, surging boost)
- Excess shaft play — the compressor wheel touches the housing
- Oil consumption with no external leak
Before you order
- Send your VIN and engine — turbos differ by engine, model year and emissions calibration, and VGT actuators are not interchangeable.
- Find and fix the cause: a plugged oil feed, restricted return, stretched oil-change intervals or a plugged air filter will kill the replacement too.
- Change the oil and filter, clean or replace the intercooler and charge pipes, and prime the oil feed before first start.
- On VGT turbos, clear codes and perform the actuator relearn if the manual calls for it.
